Stars on the Red Carpet

The Berlinale is one of the biggest international film festivals in Europe, along with Cannes and Venice. Every year famous directors and actors gather together to present their movies.  We would like to introduce some interesting activities.

When you arrive at the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, you see the signs and red flags of the festival. On the way to the main venue, the Berlinale Palast, you also find other movie theaters.  It is a big festival and you need to be prepared in order to be on time without getting lost or missing any movie. The Berlinale Palast is a special place.  The festival theme music is played and you feel special just being there. You sense the vibrant energy whether you are a professional or just a movie lover .  Photographers go to photo-calls, reporters go to press conferences, TV cameras go to the red carpet.  And fans?  They can wait at the press conference arrival gate or at the red carpet to see the stars. Red carpet events are scheduled throughout the day and the whole setting is quite impressive. Security is tight, but friendly and we must give credit to the German efficiency in managing the event.

Red Carpet: “Wild Mouse”

Luxurious red carpet is a must-see

It is -8 degrees outside, freezing, and people are waiting.  Tonight is the “Wild Mouse”  red carpet premiere. When we arrived in the afternoon, all tickets were sold out, so we decide to just have a glimpse of the red carpet.  Suddenly the TV cameras start moving and fans start shouting. Audi limousines arrive one after the other.  Young actors come out from the first car and fans are screaming and asking for autographs.  When the director arrives followed by the main cast we see the photographers in action giving directions for the best shoot.

The festival director, Mr. Dieter Kosslick comes out and waits for all the guests to arrive.  Fans are asking autographs and TV reporters are asking questions to the director and actor Mr. Josef Hader.  The main casts, Ms. Pia Hierzegger, Mr. Georg Friedrich, Mr. Jörg Hartmann, Mr. Denis Moschitto, Ms. Nora von Waldstatten and Austrian band Bilderbuch gathered around.  The glamorous red carpet scene makes us forget how cold it is.

Panorama Special : “Call Me By Your Name”

Most Inspiring Love Story of late 70s

This is definitely one of the most touching films we watched this year.  The story is set in 1983 Italy, and is about a 17-year-old boy who reveals his homosexuality.  The words “first love” could describe the movie well, as this is not just for gay people but we all recognize such true love in our life.The last scene really blew us away and left us with tears.  It is written by Mr. André Aciman, filmed by screenplay/director Luca Guadagnino along with the unforgettable actors Mr. Timothee Chalamet, Mr. Armie Hammer, Ms. Esther Garrel, and Ms. Amira Casar.

Director Guadagnino said he wanted this film as simply as possible so the protagonists have room to breathe.  Throughout the movie, we were captured from beginning to end, the pace was right and in balance with the perfect tension, no dull moment at all.  The story tells about two individuals falling in love, possible for life, but the time is not right for them to being together.  The dripping of the ripe fruit symbolizes the protagonist’s forbidden love.  “It was better yesterday,” as Ms. Esther Garrel puts it – there clearly is a sense of nostalgia throughout the movie.

This is an intimate picture any generation should watch.

Competition: “Mr. Long”

Mr. Sabu, a Japanese actor and director who presented “Chasuke’s Journey”in 2015, returned with “Mr. Long” this year.  Director Sabu, who is also a musician and who studied fashion design, truly impresses with beautiful cinematography.  At the press conference he said laughingly:  “I am always thinking, I think I have a thinking disease”. Director Sabu takes time to reflect and carefully chooses his words, though it is often his genuine answers get lost in translation.

We noticed the importance of small details and particular items in every part of the film. T-shirts with the word “Perfume” symbolize the protagonist’s happy moment, whereas knives, according to the director, express anger and grief.

The actor Mr. Chang Chen explained that the last fighting scene was quite stressful.  He said:  “Aesthetic results were very important to the director, I sincerely hope I did a good job.” Using a Taiwanese actor instead of Japanese musicians or fashion models as a protagonist is rare in Japanese movies.  Here, director Sabu delivered actors in action which is a real game changer.

The German audience seemed to love the movie very much.  A girl sitting next to us was very emotional, saying: “I was so touched and could not stop crying.  It was beautiful…”  We agree that this movie definitely deserved to be in the competition.

Generation: Wallay

One of the best features of the Berlinale is that it tries to include everybody, from handicapped people to recently arrived refugees.  The movie section called Generation was created to inspire all ages, especially young people and children. Today we attended the Swiss director Berni Goldblat’s movie “Wallay,” which tells the story of Ady, a 13-year-old boy.  Ady lives in France, but his father sent him to stay in West Africa for some time.  The spoiled young boy has to adapt to the new culture and learn different life lessons. This is probably an eye-opening exercise for the computer generation of today.

The actors, Makan Nathan Diarra and Ibrahim Koma attended the screening, answered questions, and gave many autographs.

Panorama Documentary: I Am Not Your Negro

Raoul Peck, a famous Haitian director who once promised to make the most difficult films in the world, was a member of the Berlinale International Jury in 2002, followed by the Cannes Competition Jury in 2012.  In this documentary, which is said to be the most courageous documentary of the year, he zooms in on historical racial issues.

In 1979, the American writer James Baldwin sent a letter to his agent. He wanted to write a personal memoire of his assassinated friends: Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, and Malcolm X.   However, when Baldwin died in 1987, he only left 30 pages of manuscript. Director Peck tried to complete Baldwin’s book while looking back at the era in which he lived.  He portrays the human rights movement in combination with photos of President Kennedy,  the meeting at the Arkansas University with the ”Mixing race is communism” posters, the Afro-American protest versus police supression, all events which still surface today.

The voice over of Samuel L. Jackson adds a special poetic language to the documentary.

WCF Doc Day 2017

Berlinale World Cinema Fund – WCF Doc Day 2017

Documentary directors are unique students and do not fit in a school. Who is going to help them?  Well, at least there is a counsellor office called WCF who will listen to them…

WCF, the World Cinema Fund, is an initiative of the German Federal Cultural Foundation and the Berlin International Film Festival, supported by the German Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institute.  Here, many foreign documentary directors get enthusiastic and envy Germany’s strong documentary spirit.  As more countries become somewhat secretive and real communication is becoming difficult, the German government does not interfere but gives a platform to directors telling their stories.  Today’s topic was “The Challenge of the Real: What is documentary?  Questioning the meaning and the interpretation of reality.”

Mr. Vincenzo Bugno, the Project Manager of WCF gave an opening speech, followed by speeches of Dr. Andreas Gorgen, Director General of the Department for Culture and Communication of Federal Foreign Office, and Dr. Lutz Nitsche, the Assistant to the Executive Board of German Federal Cultural Foundation.  They believe in cinema and we cannot agree more with the importance of having a platform for real cinema, which is different from the mainstream media.

By attending WCF Doc Day, we sense that this is not a money making business, but rather a teamwork for the love of cinema.  It is interesting to realize that we are all diplomats who need to listen and understand what others are dealing with through motion pictures.  There were four directors who presented their work, all clearly true believers of cinema.  The key is to remain committed.  The presence of such organization encourages many documentary directors and we hope to hear more from the WCF activities.

Red Carpet: “Colo”

Another reason to come to the Berlinale is to discover some European movies which we don’t often see in our country.  Portugal, a country with a rich history and a beautiful language, presented 9 films this year, out of which 6 in competition.

Since Brexit, the world focuses more on the EU.  For many the image of the EU is that of an elite society club, with on one hand the rich people surrounded by quality goods and on the other hand the increasing numbers of homeless people, the disagreement over the handling of refugees, and the controversial bribes of some EU officials.

In the beautiful movie “Colo”, Director Villaverde tells the story of a father, mother and daughter whose daily lives are being affected by the economical crisis.  Through the struggle of unemployment, shift work and the shortage of cash in the middle-class,  the movie portrays “real” picture, instead of the successful stories of the new rich often seen in commercial movies.

Awards of the Official Juries of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival

The 67th Berlin International Film Festival’s award ceremony was held on Saturday, February 18.  Being nominated in Berlinale sounds great, but winning gives the world’s top.

The Golden Bear for best film went to “On Body and Soul” by Director Ildikó Enyedi, the Silver Bear grand jury wen to “Félicité” by Director Alain Gomis, Silver Bear for best director went to “The Other Side of Hope” by Aki Kaurismäki, and Silver Bear for best actress went to Actress Kim Minhee of “On the Beach at Night Alone” by Director Hong Sangsoo.

There are several female directors and movies with female leading role won this year.  There were some disappointments for the fans of old-school movies who feel that cinema should look like real film and not digitally-made,  but this will remain a debatable topic.

Over 11 days, the Berlinale sold a total of 334,471 tickets. As in every year, it’s truly the most well organized movie festival in the world.  We cannot wait for the next festival which is scheduled from February 15 to 25, 2018.

ジャンフランコ・ロッシ監督

~現在起こっている人道的問題に焦点をあてた傑作〜
第66回ベルリン国際映画祭•最高賞の金熊賞はイタリアのジャンフランコ・ロッシ監督のドキュメンタリー映画　’Fuocoammare’『Fire at Sea』。地中海に浮かぶ小さな島Lampedusaに連日難民を乗せたボートがやってくる。この悲惨な様子を知ってほしいという監督の愛情いっぱいの映画。受賞した時真っ先に「希望の旅路にたどり着けなかった人たちのことを考える」と話し、人道的に彼らを受け入れる姿を見せてくれたLampedusaの人々に捧げたいと語った。去年の金熊賞のジャファル•パナヒ監督（イラン映画『タクシー』）と同様シネマ界にラブレターを書いたような作品だ。

舞台となったLampedusaの島はチューニジアとシシリー島の間にあり、ヨーロッパへ向かうアフリカや中近東からの難民が最初にたどり着く場所である。現在欧州で大問題となっている連日到着する難民を乗せたボートだが、保護された時にはすでに息絶えている人々も多いという悲痛な現場状況を描いている。しかしその一方で島で暮らす12歳の少年の日常生活が描かれている。島の人々が素朴に暮らす様子が重い課題とバランスを保つと同時に、双方の対照的な境遇も映し出す。社会派ベルリン映画祭にふさわしい監督の優しさが感じ取れる映画だ。またエキュメニカル審査員賞、アムネスティ・インターナショナル映画賞も並行して受賞しているのでこの映画の素晴らしさがうかがえる。

ベルリン国際映画祭でドキュメンタリー映画がこの金熊賞を受賞したのは初めて。ジャンフランコ・ロッシ監督は2年前のヴェネチア映画祭でも同映画祭初となるドキュメンタリー映画での金獅子賞（グランプリ）受賞を果たしている。優れたドキュメンタリー作家である以上にロッシ監督は他のドキュメンタリー監督たちに最高賞の希望を与えた。巨匠監督が男泣きしたドキュメンタリーは今年の必見作品だ。

ミヒャエル•バルハウス監督
偉大なるカメラマン監督
Michael Ballhaus（ミヒャエル•バルハウス）監督は50年以上カメラに携わっているドイツ出身の映画撮影監督。70年代にドイツのRainer Werner Fassbender（ライナー•ヴェルナー•ファスビンダー）監督の作品に多く参加したことで有名。この度第66回ベルリン国際映画祭で名誉金熊賞を受賞した。2007年にはBavarian映画賞世界的貢献賞も受賞し、米アカデミー賞には３度ノミネートされている。ドイツのTVのアシスタント•カメラマンから始まった職歴。1968年に監督デビューした後、ファスビンダー監督の映画17本に参加。1982年にドイツ映画でハリウッドに行き、John Sayles（ジョン•セイルズ）監督と出会う。その後、Martin Scorsese（マーティン•スコセッシ）監督、Francis Ford Coppola（フランシス•フォード•コッポラ）監督などの映画に貢献する。代表作に”The Fabulous Baker Boys”や “Gangs of New York”などがある。現在も映画を撮影したり、プロデュースし、教壇にも立つという。これまで手掛けた作品が130以上というバルハウス監督。彼のトレードマークは360度回る撮影法。俳優の周りをぐるっと一回りしながら映す技法をハリウッド映画にも持ち込んだ彼。カメラの撮影監督というのは監督の無理難題も引き受ける。４夜のうちに150シーンを撮った時は、監督を感激のあまり泣かせたんだと照れながら秘話を披露してくれた。バルハウス監督はロス•アンジェルスで個人の賞を受賞した”Goodfellas”（『グッドフェラス』）のキッチンから主人公を追うシーンがお気に入りだと語った。これまで米アカデミー賞にも３度ノミネートされているが、裏方が多かった監督。手がけた作品のリストを見ると私たちにも馴染みのある映画が多いが、これまで彼の名前を知っている人は少なかったはずだ。50年という長いカメラの貢献歴で今回初めて世界に大きく認められた監督を心から祝福したい。

Actress Kaori Momoi

女優 桃井かおり さん

ベルリン国際映画祭のパノラマ部門に出品されるドイツのDoris Dörrie（ドリス・デリエ）監督作品『Grüße aus Fukushima』に出演している桃井かおりさん。彼女は「可愛いけれど不良っぽい、超かっこいいオネーさん」で「男に媚びらない」でも「不思議だからモテる」永遠のかっこよさを持っている極めて少ない人です。

この写真タバコが入っていますが、それも彼女なら自然です。ドイツ映画『Grüße aus Fukushima』も良かったです。でも見終わって出てきた言葉はやはり「桃井さんがいてくれてよかった」です。彼女独特の話し方、演技に見入るので日本語でも英語でも同じです。後で英語だったと改めて感じます。これはサザンオールスターズの桑田さんの歌と同じ。英語ができても基本の歌やお芝居ができていないとダメだと教えてくれる先輩たちです（もちろん英語で縁起が十分できる方です）。2007年のベルリン国際映画祭にてNETPAC賞を受賞した桃井さんですが、今回「フォーラム」部門で『Hee』がワールドプレミアされました。ハリウッドでもアンジェリーナ•ジョリーさん以外に、なかなか監督、主演を兼ねる女優監督はいません。時の綺麗な人たちも良いですが、年を重ねても素敵でいられる彼女の存在は大きいですね。

俳優 真田広之さん

〜世界で活躍する日本の人気俳優〜

真田広之さんはジャンルを問わず幅広い分野で活躍している。子役を経て、歌、アイドル、アクション、舞踊、演劇、ドラマ、映画など、外見と内面において他の俳優にないものを持ち合わせている。今回映画『Mr. Holmes』のワールドプレミアのために、ベルリン国際映画祭を訪れた真田さんに話を聞いた。

言葉は筋肉

『 Mr. Holmes 』に日本人の梅崎という役で出演している真田さん。昨年スティーブン・スピルバーグ監督製作のTVドラマ『エクスタント（Extant）』の、シーズン１の撮影が終わった翌日に、この映画の撮影のためロンドンへ向かったという。ハリウッドではアメリカ英語だったが、すぐにブリティッシュ英語に切り替えなければならなかった。真田さんが演じる梅崎は日本でブリティッシュ英語を勉強したということになっていたので、アメリカで２週間ほどトレーニングをした後現地入りし、翌日からすぐに撮影に入ったそうだ。「言葉は筋肉だから」と言う真田さんの言葉には説得力がある。

演技でなく本物になりきる

今回脚本と共に届いた手紙で依頼された梅崎役は、真田さんにとってとても興味のある仕事だったと語る。引退後のホームズを描いているというアイディア、また世界で最も有名なキャラクターの一つである「シャーロック・ホームズ」の話の中に日本人が出てくることに感動したという。これは俳優として、また日本でシャーロック・ホームズを知っている者として「ありがたい設定」だと思ったそうだ。

脚本を読んですぐに原作の小説シリーズを購入した。また原作の中の梅崎はワイヤーフレームのまるメガネをかけていたので、自分でアンティークショップへ出向いてメガネも購入したという。まるメガネをかけながら原作を読んでイメージを膨らませ、日常生活でもかけてみて雰囲気作りをしたそうだ。「このメガネをかけたらブリティッシュ英語になります。そんな小道具があったら欲しいな」と笑った。

真田さんはこの映画製作では暖かい雰囲気で演技ができたという。ビル・コンドン監督とは最初、役の設定などについて、互いに意見を交換しながら電話で確認しあった。現地入りして自分がブリティッシュ英語で四苦八苦している時、監督に「梅崎はイギリスに憧れて育った男だから、プレッシャーを感じるのではなく、もっとプレイフルに思い切りブリティッシュ・アクセントを楽しめばいい」と言われて気持ちが軽くなったそうだ。思い切りしゃべった直後にカットがあり、「監督、今のはやりすぎました？」と聞くと、監督は笑いながら「いやいや、それでいいんだ」というふうに自分を引っ張ってくれたという。

コンドン監督は真田さんについて「この役はヒロ（真田広之さん）にぴったりだと思った。しかし彼のような俳優にしては役が小さいので断られるかと心配した。彼はきちんとしたクラシックな演技トレーニングを受けているにもかかわらず、これまでハリウッドではそれを見せる機会がなかったように感じる。今回はイアンと息がぴったりで二人を見ているのが僕の喜びだった。しかも裏方まで手伝ってもらって感謝している」と語った。また真田さんの大先輩で名優のイアン・マッケランさんも「彼は役にぴったりの上、自身の経験とカルチャーもプラスになっている。俳優でなく本当の梅崎だと思った。礼儀正しさも現場に持ってきて、他の人を見習わせてくれて嬉しかった」と真田さんに対しての信頼さを隠せなかった。

正しい日本文化を常に意識して

今回真田さんと２度目の共演となる女優のローラ・リニーさんも記者会見で「日本のシーンはヒロが間違いないように詳細にわたっていろいろヘルプしていた」と話していた。インタビューの後「広島のシーンで、背景のCGはどうでしたか？」と逆に質問をしてきた真田さん。彼は裏方セットの小道具、看板の文字の確認や修正など俳優に全く関係のない所も見て回っていたようだ。「最後まで確認したんですがどうも気になって」とかなり完璧主義の様子。間違った日本文化が伝わって笑われたりしないように、映画全体に気を配っていた。

また真田さんは、撮影現場が唯一後輩に自分の持っているものを全部伝えて継承してもらう場所だと考えている。「先輩から教わったものに自分の経験をプラスして次に伝えていく。それは代々行われなければいけないことで、これからも喜んでやっていきたい」と語った。演技、アクション、容姿の他に、演技指導、演出や小道具にも気配りを提供できる俳優は、監督のみならず映画にとっても貴重な存在である。

「長年かかった」アクションと芝居のバランス

真田さんといえばスポーツマン的でアクション映画から切り離せない部分がある。近年のハリウッド映画でも主演俳優を上回る殺陣シーンを見せている。しかし意外にも、真田さんにとってアクションとは俳優としての要素、スキルのひとつでしかないようだ。

５歳で「劇団ひまわり」からデビューしたが、ガリガリでひ弱な少年だったそうだ。すぐに車酔いはするし、扁桃腺の摘出手術もした。小学校４年生くらいから剣道、水泳などを始め、体を鍛えるため練習に通った。「コンプレックスの反動でがんばった」という彼は、子役時代に映画を見ると、俳優がスタントなしでアクションをやっていたので、大人になった時に俳優を続けていたら、全部自分でやろうと思ったそうだ。中学に入って、歌、踊り、日本舞踊、殺陣、スタント、アクションを始めた。これらは全て俳優として要求されたら、答えられるだけの肉体を作るための手段だったらしい。

「アクションだけを求められてイメージが固定することは、俳優を続けていく上でストレスになる」と真田さんは語る。一時意図的にアクションなしの仕事を優先していた。そして演技だけで勝負してから、もう一度アクションを復活させた。もちろん体は常に鍛えていたそうだ。最近はアクション映画とシリアスなドラマのどちらも要求されるようになった。「長年かかってやっと自分の中で（アクションとドラマが）バランス良くなってきたかな」と微笑む。今後も求められる役のニーズに、バランスよく応えていきたいそうだ。

ロス・アンジェルスに来てからもう10年。数々の作品を通じてキャストやスタッフと出会い、輪が繋がっていくことのありがたさを感じているという真田さん。現在『Extant』の他に別のTVドラマ『Helix』にも出演中。今年１月に始まったシーズン２では久々にアクションも見せてくれるのでファンは見逃せない。私たちと同じように日本を離れ、ハリウッドやヨーロッパで現在の位置を確立した真田さんの今後の活躍に期待したい。

1960年東京都出身。５歳で子役デビューし、俳優、歌手、アイドル、またスタントもこなすアクション・スター。舞踊『玉川流』の名取で、英国シェイクスピアの演劇、ハリウッド映画、ドラマの俳優としても世界的に知られている。代表作は映画では『レイルウェイ運命の旅路』『ウルヴァリン・SAMURAI』『47Ronin』『ラストサムライ』『ラッシュアワー３』『里見八犬伝』『柳生一族の陰謀』など、子役として『新網走番外地　さいはての流れ者』『浪曲子守唄』など、舞台は『リア王』『ハムレット』など、そしてドラマは『高校教師』『Extant』『Helix』など数多い。日本アカデミー賞・最優秀主演男優賞, ブルーリボン賞・主演男優賞, キネマ旬報ベスト・テン主演男優賞など、俳優としての受賞の他に英国の名誉大英帝国勲章第５位（MBE）や芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞も受賞している。現在ロス・アンジェルス在住で映画やドラマなど幅広く活躍中。日本が誇る人気俳優である。

～迷路に飛び込んだような写真展～

今年ドイツのベルリン国際映画祭で名誉金熊賞を受賞し、『大都会のアリス』『パリ、テキサス』『ベルリン•天使の詩』そして最近バンクーバーで公開された『The Salt of the Earth』など数多くの作品で知られるヴィム•ヴェンダース監督。テーマもなくどこに行き着くか予測ができない監督の映画にファンが多く、不思議な癒し効果もあるといわれている。

写真」が語る「存在」

ヴェンダース監督は今年８月に７０歳の誕生日を迎える。出生地であるドイツ•デュッセルドルフでは彼の誕生記念を祝う写真展がオープン。彼の写真展は1986年に始まり、2006年には小津安二郎監督のロケ地である『尾道への旅』が日本で開催された。「人生の半分は写真」と称する彼のこれまでに温めていた写真８０点が一挙にこれまでにない大型フレームで公開された。映画は現実に近づけるため３Dなど特殊技術を使う監督。しかし写真はシンプルなアナログカメラで、ライトや三脚を一切使わないというこだわりがある。「新しい土地に迷い込んだ時、まるでレーダーで導かれるかのように静かで変わった場所に遭遇する」「写真は『今だけ』そこにあるものを見せてくれる」と話す監督が、世界中で撮った写真を披露する。ゆったりとしたスペースで、３D迷路のように行き止まりが何箇所も設けられたデュッセルドルフのクンストパラスト（Museum Kunstpalast）は、そんな彼にぴったりの美術館である。

早朝入館するとそこには彼のパートナーで写真家であるドナータ（Donata）夫人が念入りにライトの調整をしていた。ヴェンダース監督の写真展には必ず彼女の姿がある。そして監督も来館者に混じって静かに鑑賞していた。人並み以上のオーラがあるのであっという間に見つかってしまう。照れ笑いしながら写真撮影に応じてまた移動する。そんな気さくな一面もある。

監督と日本

ヴィム•ヴェンダース監督というと映画『東京画』を思い浮かべる人が多いだろう。彼のおかげで小津安二郎監督を知ったという世代は世界中にいる。2011年の秋に福島を訪れた監督は「どこにいても福島を思い出さない日はなかった」と話した。展示されていた３点の写真はどれも色があせて不思議な正弦波がついている。「見ただろう？ あれは持ち帰ったフィルムの写真全てについていた。僕が後でつけたのではないよ」と説明しながら、「目に見えない放射線がついに正体を出した」とも語った。福島の写真の真正面には奈良の竹林から光がきらめく写真が目をひく。監督が静かにカメラを固定する手に蚊の群れがおりてきて「レンズの前に来るな」と願いながら撮った作品だそうだ。

「悲惨な出来事を記憶から抜きとれないなら、この目で見て、その辛さを自分も背負う」。普段からそう話している監督は福島以外にもニューヨークやエルサレムの被災地へ足を運んでいる。しかし、今回展示されている写真は悲惨さや悲しみを訴えるのではなく、優しい光があり、監督の愛情が注がれているようなものばかりだった。そして会場を大きく占めるのはおなじみの小津映画の舞台となった広島県尾道（おのみち）市の写真８点。「小津監督の映画には人生のメランコリーが全て含まれている。東京物語が多分僕自身の映画史の中で一番好きな映画だと思う。あれだよ（指をさして）、尾道。僕はどうしても自分の目で見たかったんだ。」と語ってくれた。「失われた楽園の領土」と監督がよぶ尾道では「夜歩きながら聖地に着いた気持ちになった」そうだ。

ヴェンダース映画に出てくる風景を再び写真で見る。今まで見たことがないほど大きな写真の真中に立つと、目の前にその風景が広がる。まるで監督の横で一緒に見ているかのようだ。彼は何も言わないし、自分も何も言わない。そんな静かな雰囲気が味わえる素晴らしい個展だった。Donata Wenders – Places of the Mind夫婦で味わえる旅写真がいっぱい ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、2005年にヴィム•ヴェンダース監督と奥様のドナータ•ヴェンダースさんが、小津安二郎監督の『東京物語』を追って広島の尾道を訪ねました。あまりの感激から二人共写真を撮りまくり、ついに夫妻共同の初個展『尾道への旅』が開催されました。それから10年があっという間に経ち、今度はパリで二人の第２回目写真展が開かれています。 まず個展に関係のある、今月ヨーロッパでプレミア公開される『Everything Will Be Fine』という３D映画を紹介します。最近ドキュメンタリー映画が多かったので、監督のドラマは７年ぶりです。主演は今最も注目されているジェームズ•フランコさん。雪の降る田舎町を運転していたライターのトーマス（フランコ）は、不注意から一人の子供を死なせてしまいます。取り返しのつかない罪を抱えながら生きるトーマスと、子供の死から未だに解放されない母親ケイト（シャーロット•ゲンズブール）、そして被害者の弟である少年との12年ぶりの再会に焦点があたります。辛い過去を受け入れて人は幸せになれるというヴェンダース監督らしい優しい映画です。 個展はこの映画のロケーション地と同じ、カナダのモントリオールなどケベック州の風景が中心です。ヴェンダース監督はやはり大きな風景を写していました。こんな場所へ行きたくなります。奥様のドナータさんは以前京都で着物を着た女性を写していました。今回もやはり人、ジェームス•フランコさんを激写しています。フランコさん、実はかなりの勉強オタク?なんです。現在ニューヨーク大学の演劇教授ですが、同時に博士号の勉強もされています。彼は撮影中も毎日、本を読んでいたそうです。

ところが今回写真の彼はいつもと違いました。被写体としてはかなりハンサムで、凹凸があり白黒がとてもよく似合います。さすがドナータさんの写真です。この静かな、ジェームス•ディーンを思わせるフランコさんをずっと見つめたくなりました。
