Director Claus Drexel

〜When Movies Become A Gift〜
On the Edge of the World (Au bord du monde) France, 97min.
Director Claus Drexel is originally from Bavaria Germany, and kindly agreed to talk to us during the Vancouver International Film Festival. When he lived in Paris, he saw many homeless people and wanted to find out what kind of world view they had. He knew he couldn’t just interview them, so he decided to find a way to connect with them. And over the course of one year, he appeared on the streets every night with his Canon C-300 and began talking with them. He was touched by the fact that the homeless people cared about his well-being during the cold winter time. Their pure and kind heart struck him and he felt he had to deliver their voice to the world, authentic and straightforward, without stressing for sympathy. Thus, it became his mission to create a movie about their world seen from their point of view.
The documentary was selected by the Cannes Film Festival and other international film festivals in Europe and Canada. It won numerous awards.
“At one moment I thought I cannot change the world or anything even if I make this kind of documentary, but I wanted to show something…I just had to do it”, he says. “The most difficult time for me was not the shooting during the cold winter nights, but when the shooting ended and I had to return home leaving them behind” he confesses and adds : “This movie changed my view of life”.
The director talks at an angle so we feel as if the homeless people are sitting in front of us. They talk about their own background, painful situations, share their philosophy, and even give genuine smiles. The contrast between the beauty of Paris and the reality of the homeless is breathtaking. They have no place to live in and although they were deprived of their rights and their dignity, yet opened up to the director and appeared very genuine. In this money-making world we need more film directors like Mr. Claus Drexel. This is a must-see movie!
